In a world of dwindling resources, small steps can change our future

How our shoes help our customers to tread lightly.

In a world of dwindling resources, we all have a vital role to play in protecting our planet

Viscata wants us all to tread as lightly as possible on the earth we live on. It’s the only one we’ve got so it’s up to each of us to look after it. That’s why we wanted to share with you some of the steps we’re taking to ensure that we minimize our impact on the environment at every stage of our journey

Doing the right thing isn’t easy!

We know that sometimes, doing the right thing isn’t as easy as it first seems - the road to hell is paved with good intentions! So, we’re working hard every day to help our customers to do their bit. From local sourcing (wherever possible) to hand-making every pair from natural materials and from shipping by sea to recycling ocean waste into summer shoes, we’re doing what we can to make a difference

Take the first step with us...

It’s going to be a long journey but, as the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu said: "A journey of a thousand miles, starts with a single step”. We hope you’ll take that step with us and join us on our journey to help to make the world a better place.

We know our planet is facing a massive challenge. But if enough of us do the little things right, we can help to solve a big problem.  Here are some of the Viscata initiatives that we hope will help to minimize our impact on the place we live:

The journey begins

Every pair of Viscata espadrilles is made by hand using centuries old techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. Our shoes are made by craftsmen and women who share our passion for doing things naturally and who are passionate about quality.

That’s why, wherever possible we use natural materials such as leather and jute to make our beautiful espadrilles. Every pair is made with love and care in Spain.  Wherever possible, we use local materials and our artisans use traditional tools (such as iron “shoe hammers” and natural glue) to turn these natural materials into beautiful shoes that you can wear with pride.

Getting our shoes to you

Once we’ve made these beautiful shoes, we need to sell them and get them to you. We sell on-line. This means we aren’t burning lights, heating shops or travelling long distances to work.  All of these things help to reduce our impact on the world around us.

Selling online

Once you’ve ordered our shoes, we’ll pack them up in a locally sourced box made of recycled materials and get them straight to you - wherever you are. We hope that the experience will delight you every time a new pair arrives - and you can enjoy them safe in the knowledge that step by step, we’re building a better world.

Sustainable packaging

Gone with the wind...

We live by the sea. We love the sea. That’s why at every opportunity, we ship your shoes via sea. Right now, it’s the most sustainable way to get our shoes from Spain to you. We know it’s not perfect, but on balance, we think it’s worth it. It massively reduces our carbon footprint - and we think that’s really important. In fact, more than 95%of our products are exported via cargo ships.

We know that has its consequences, so a few years ago, we even trialled shipping our shoes across the Atlantic on a romantic sailing boat (via the Caribbean, to pick up vital rum supplies, of course!). Then Covid hit. But next year, we’ll be looking at this again and (hopefully) your shoes will be flitting across the sea to your home. We’ll never be able to reduce our dependence on cargo ships completely, but it’s a step in the right direction.  Wind power is the future - and it reflects our philosophy perfectly!

Tackling ocean waste

Every year, we hear heartbreaking news about the scourge of plastic that is building up around the planet - and especially in the oceans.

As a coastal city, our Barcelona HQ takes this really seriously and we’ll do what we can to clean up our world. Our team regularly walks the beaches of Barcelona picking up leftover trash and helping to keep the beach clean for all of us.

In addition to that, we’re selling some beautiful shoes this year, made from recycled ocean waste. Introducing our Caseta Seaqual shoes.  They’re comfortable, cool and good for the planet, so we think you’ll love them. And, if you do, we’ll introduce more eco shoes in the years ahead. It’s our beach, it’s our ocean and it’s our responsibility.

Wearing our shoes

With shoes as beautiful as these, it’s easy to forget that natural materials tend to be naturally comfortable. Our traditional jute soles and locally sourced canvas outers mean that your feet are as close to nature as you can get.

The natural jute absorbs sweat and odor as well as giving you a comfortable platform for all that strolling you’re going to do.  The lightweight, high quality canvas outers not only look stunning, but they’ll keep you cool during those long, hot summer days (and nights).

We love nature. We think it’s time we got back to it.

Returning our shoes

It’s ok to change your mind. We think life should be simple. We think you probably do as well. Once you join the Viscata family, we want it to be for life.

That’s why we want to make it as easy as possible for you to return your shoes to us, if for any reason you’re disappointed. For a full 120 days after purchase, we promise to exchange or return your shoes without any additional charges.

We also know how valuable your time is. That’s why we make it easy for our customers to return shoes via Happy Returns centers (there are more than 2,500 of them conveniently located across the U.S.).

Or, if it’s easier, simply print off a returns label from our return online centre and mail your shoes back to us using the postal service. We’ll do the rest!  Either way, this means less driving - and less carbon, so everybody wins!

This local access and simplified process takes us one more step closer to making our planet a more sustainable place to live.

Giving our shoes a second life...

At Viscata, we want to reduce waste whenever we can.  And if we can do that in a way that has a social purpose, that’s even better.

Every year, we donate more than 2,000 pairs of “end of life” espadrilles to our partners at Soles4Souls who refurbish them and give them a second life by sending them to disaster areas and vulnerable children around the world. This process helps to reduce waste to landfill, empowers women to break the cycle of poverty and helps to create much needed work.

We’re proud to have been able to recycle thousands of pairs of pre-owned espadrilles every year to help those in need.

Loving our shoes

We really hope you love our shoes as much as we do.  We put so much love, care and attention into making every pair.  We care about our social impact.  We care about the earth we live on.  We care about how we behave.  We do this every day, because we only have one earth.
