Three Creative Ways to Lace Up Your Espadrilles

Lace-up espadrilles are without doubt one of the best known and most famous shoe styles on the planet. These versatile and natural Spanish shoes have come a long way from the basic foot coverings invented for Spanish soldiers more than 600 years ago. These days, lace-up espadrilles come in all shapes and sizes and they can be found on the feet of everybody from royalty to rock stars. Nobody can deny that these shoes have become style icons over the decades. From their reinvention by Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s all the way through to style icons like Audrey Hepburn, Princess Grace of Monaco and beyond, espadrilles have always had a chic look.

The first choice of princesses, queens and movie stars

More recently, they have become a firm favorite of modern royalty, with Kate Middleton espadrilles regularly featuring on her royal tours, walkabouts and even kids’ sports days. And of course, Queen Leticia of Spain is an advocate for traditional espadrille style, often seen sporting a pair on family holidays, at polo matches and just ordinary family occasions. But while we’ve all fallen in love with their flirty, natural Mediterranean style, sometimes we can get put off by the daunting task of tying the knots. Fear not. Whether you’re stepping out in wedding espadrilles, staying cool in flat espadrilles, keeping it neat in closed toe espadrilles or going for the traditional look in our classic espadrille wedges, we have the answers you’ve been searching for.

The big question: how do you lace up espadrilles?

Viscata has a lace-up espadrille style for everyone and for those who don’t want to tie themselves in knots trying to get their laces to stay in place, we have standard wedges, mules, flats and heels for all shapes and sizes. But our most original and classic espadrilles come with real Spanish style - and long laces. While everybody loves their Spanish style, the question everyone asks is how to tie your espadrilles. And even more specifically, how do you tie espadrilles so they don’t fall?

Tying your espadrilles is easier than you think

It looks difficult, however, tying them up in style is easier than most people think. So here’s an easy guide to the three basic espadrille tying techniques that will help you to look elegant without the pain. We’ve even created a series of simple videos for you to watch any time you need to strap up those long laces in the noble cause of fashion. There are three easy techniques for you to learn how to tie lace up espadrilles. Just follow the links below to find  the technique that works best for you.

DOUBLE LACE, FRONT TIE

This is one of the simpler and more elegant techniques. First, make sure you’ve divided the ribbon into equal parts. Then gently cross the ribbon both in front and behind. You’re now ready to lace it up to show the bow in front. Or, if you prefer, cross it one more time for a more discreet bow. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3…

DOUBLE CROSS BACK TIE

Introducing the double cross back tie. This is one of the prettier espadrille knots. First, change the position of the ties and thread them from the inside. Then, place your foot directly in the hole you’ve created. You can now adjust the ribbon to fit your ankle, ensuring that the ribbon is divided equally. Finally, cross the ribbon both in front and behind. Now you can decide if you’d rather show the bow in the front or be more discreet with a bow in the back.

SINGLE CROSS, FRONT TIE

First of all, change the position of the ties and thread them from the inside. Then, place your foot directly in the hole you’ve created. You can now adjust the ribbon to fit your ankle, ensuring that the ribbon is a little longer on the inside. Finally, cross the ribbon both in front and behind and make the bow on the outside.

Don’t tie yourself in knots…

You’re going to need to know how to properly tie your espadrilles so that they stay in place, whatever the occasion. Hopefully, that will become a lot easier once you’ve mastered these simple techniques. So don’t tie yourself in knots, do it the easy way with Viscata.
