Viscata's Fosca Suede Camel Wedge Espadrilles. Handmade in Spain,

Three Creative Ways to Lace Up Your Espadrilles

Everybody loves the elegance and style of an authentic Spanish espadrille. There’s something of the Flamenco dancer about this type of shoe that just screams passion, sensuality and elegance. And while espadrilles for women come in hundreds of shapes, sizes and styles these days, the classic espadrille is a lace-up wedge on a natural jute sole and features a “wrap around” lace to keep them in place. And that’s where things start to get a bit difficult. Some people feel intimidated about how to tie lace espadrilles. Many women feel that they won’t look good in them, that it’s really hard to properly tie their espadrilles or that they might slip down and look sloppy. But the good news is that getting your espadrilles to stay in place and not loosen is a lot easier than you might expect.

Tying your espadrilles is easier than you think

It looks difficult. However, tying your espadrilles up in style is much easier than most people think. Are there different techniques for different styles of espadrilles?

Yes. Here are three of our favorite espadrille-tying styles that you ought to be aware of when you’re looking to secure your lace-up footwear so they don’t loosen.

Introducing:

  • the “traditional” technique (for a timeless and secure fit).
  • the “side tie” technique (for a more elegant and practical look).
  • the “stylish and secure” technique (for a stylish crossed ribbon look).

Each of these chic ways to tie your espadrilles is slightly different and requires a different approach, expertly explained in each of these short 2 minute videos.

Traditional espadrille lacing technique: timeless and secure

This traditional method is both simple and elegant. It’s the way espadrilles have been tied for centuries and it results in a timeless and classic look that will keep your espadrilles securely attached to you, whatever the occasion. Viscata has pulled together a short video to help you. The first thing to do is to divide the ribbon into equal parts to ensure a symmetrical and balanced look. As with the other techniques, first divide the ribbon into equal lengths. Then, cross the ribbon around the ankles, before bringing it around and crossing it once more. This will result in a beautiful criss-cross pattern that's both secure and stylish. Finally, lace it up and tie a bow at the front for a bold and fashionable statement. And if your style is more subtle and discreet, then simply cross it one more time and finish it off by tying an elegant bow at the back. However you choose to finish the tie off, you’re going to stand out from the crowd.

Mastering the espadrille lacing up technique: stylish and secure

If you’re looking to master the art of lacing up your espadrilles in a crossed way that is both stylish and secure, then this technique is perfect for adding a touch of elegance to your summer footwear. Whether you're a first-time wearer or looking to refine your skills, this method will keep your espadrilles snug and chic all day long. Have a look at this short video for step-by-step instructions on how to master the stylish and secure lacing up technique. The first thing you need to do is to change the position of your ties and insert them from the inside to ensure that they’re ready for tying. Now adjust the ribbon around your ankle and make sure that the ribbon is equally divided. This will make the tying process much easier. Cross the ribbons in front of  your ankles and bring them around the back to cross it again. This creates a beautiful cris-cross pattern that looks super elegant. And finally, you have a stylish choice to show the now at the front for a cute boho look or, if you prefer, you can be more discreet and tie the bow at the back.

Espadrille lacing with a side tie: elegant and practical

The second option is to tie your espadrilles using the ankle bracelet and side tie technique. This is the perfect approach if you’re looking for a secure fit that’s also stylish. Viscata has pulled together some easy instructions on a short video to help you get started. The best way to get going with this technique is by changing the position of the ties. You’ll need to insert them from the inside to ensure their position’s just right. Next, go ahead and slip your foot into the hole and make sure that it feels comfy and snug. Then, adjust the ribbon and ensure that the ribbon is slightly longer on the inside. This will ensure that the tying process has a balanced look. Cross the ribbon in front of your ankle and then bring it around to the back and cross it again. The result will be a pattern that looks elegant and keeps your espadrilles secure. And if you want an even fancier look, then position the bow on the outside of your ankle for a cute and chic finish that is bound to turn heads.
