Eye catching new patterns inspired by the world around us

Enchanting new Viscata patterns to keep you one step ahead in the style stakes.

Some of the most beautiful things in the world are inspired by the Mediterranean. And Barcelona has itself been the personal muse for many of history's most imaginative artists and creative spirits. Everyone from Pablo Picasso to Joan Miro and from Salvador Dali to Antoni Gaudi have wandered the streets of this beautiful city, drawn by its unique Mediterranean light and rich, vibrant culture. This spirit of creativity draws millions of people every year to enjoy the sights and sounds of Barcelona and it got us thinking. What inspiration can we take to give our new Viscata espadrille shoes a little lift? When we looked around, we saw plenty that inspired us. So, we’ve introduced four beautiful new patterns for our handmade Viscata espadrilles that we think will put a smile on your face for the sunny days ahead.

Four beautiful new patterns to set you apart from the crowd.

MAJOLICA

European style. Natural materials. Classic beauty.

Our Viscata shoes are born in the Mediterranean. We’re inspired by the colors, shapes, styles and materials that surround us, so we’ve covered these beautiful handmade espadrille wedges with a uniquely Mediterranean print style that will catch the eye. It’s an echo of the stunning designs found on traditional earthenware pots on the sunny island of Mallorca, from which it derives its name.

For many centuries, the Iberian peninsula was governed by the Moors from North Africa and it was they who introduced this unique style to Italy where it became very popular. From there, it was adopted by factories across the world and it wasn’t long before the pattern became a global phenomenon. But nothing lasts forever and by the turn of the 20th century, its initial popularity faded as it became increasingly unfashionable. By the 1970s there was a revived interest in Victorian era artefacts and production of Majolica tiles recommenced. Fast forward to 2023 and the original motifs from the Victorian age were being pulled out and used as patterns on a variety of objects from ceramics to curtains and from laptop cases to shoes.

And that’s where Viscata enters the story. We love this Majolica pattern and all the wonderful cultural connections that it embraces. That’s why we chose it as one of our new patterns for our handmade authentic Spanish espadrille wedges. With its intricate Victorian shapes and its distinct cobalt blue colors, this is a pattern that we think will turn heads. Its unique style will set you apart from the crowd and express your Mediterranean sophistication. And that cobalt blue will really get you noticed. Perfect for: beach strolling and shopping.

GINGHAM

Cute, comfortable and on trend. Gingham is back.

Gingham is making yet another comeback and right now, it’s red hot. First popularized by Bridget Bardot back in the 194os, her gingham dresses blended simplicity with sophistication. This year, gingham is once again in fashion. Legend has it that it first appeared as a simple print pattern in 17th century Malaysia where it was adapted by the British. They took the striped effect of the original Malaysian pattern and evolved it into its now instantly recognized checks. The result is a drop dead gorgeous look that adds a little casual elegance to our beautiful shoes. So, what exactly is a Gingham pattern?

Well, for many years it was synonymous with Dorothy’s blue dress in The Wizard of Oz or red and white checked table cloths in Italian restaurants. But it also has a long post-Malaysia history, particularly in the US. Generally, Gingham is a simple two-color pattern, generally found in either red and white or blue and white combinations. The squares within the pattern can vary in size and it’s often reversible so that it appears the same on both sides. You can “dress it up” (Brigitte Bardot even used it for her wedding dress). It’s also very popular as a pattern on “dress shirts” and is often paired with slacks or jeans.

But if you’re feeling in a beach mood, you might also find this traditional pattern printed on beach towels or even bathing suits. It’s also an excellent way of accessorizing accent pieces, or adding a pop of color to your outfits. We think it looks pretty cute on our handmade Spanish espadrilles and we’re sure that you’ll love them this season. So, why not experience the enduring allure of gingham as you step out in our comfortable, natural espadrilles.

Perfect for: picnics and romantic dinners by the sea.

PAISLEY

Exotic shoes inspired by the Tree of Life.

Paisley is a timeless classic. The Paisley style was born in India and is inspired by one of that country's most recognized patterns, officially known as the Tree of Life. Based on a Zoroastrian motif (featuring a cypress tree and a floral spray) it has long been an ancient Indian symbol and this traditional pattern has retained its popularity over the years and is currently back in style. In the 1970s, Paisley made its second comeback when it was rediscovered as the favorite pattern of hippies and bohemians. It returned to fashion back in the 70s and since then it has become one of the most sought after patterns for anybody looking to spice up their outfits with a touch of the exotic.

Paisley made yet another comeback last year and was seen on everything from shirts to laptop cases. And it looks like it’s going to be pretty popular this year as well. With its complex swirls and mysterious patterns, it’s evocative of another time when the spirit of adventure reigned supreme. It transports you to another era, back to the days of the hippy trail, when hundreds made the overland pilgrimage to the Indian subcontinent to discover the mysteries of the East. You don’t have to travel all the way to Kathmandu to look stylish. The good news is this pattern looks beautiful on our gorgeous, handmade natural Viscata espadrilles. So, if you’re looking for a little inspiration from the East, look no further. Paisley’s back.

Perfect for: hot summer evenings where a little boho chic will get you noticed.

HERRINGBONE

Geometry and style to make you stand out from the crowd.

flat espadrille shoes in beige color

Herringbone has been around for centuries, but it’s not often used for espadrilles. Well that’s all about to change at Viscata. With its geometric pattern, this striking design is basically a cool arrangement of rectangles and it's often used as a way of laying out mosaics. This symmetry makes it perfect for applying to fabrics and materials and that's exactly what we’ve done with our latest design. So, what’s all this got to do with fish, I hear you ask?

Well, this pattern became known as a “Herringbone” for its apparent resemblance to the bones of a certain fish. Whatever its origins, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s produced with nature in mind. With its subtle color palette and smooth, earthy tones these shoes are practical and stylish, all at the same time. And this subtle elegance gives them a certain “je ne sais quoi” that elevates you above the ordinary. These classic flats have an elasticated v-vamp for extra comfort and a double-stitched toe bar to protect you from scuffing and accidental bumps.

And if you turn them over, you’ll find a lovely reminder of Barcelona with impressions of Barcelona’s famous flower-inspired street tiles, commonly known as Panots. You’ll see these beautiful tiles laid down all over Barcelona’s streets and boulevards. True evidence of the vibrant, eclectic and unique Mediterranean culture that inspires our beautiful handmade espadrilles.

Perfect for: casual strolling and cool cookouts.
